Passengers
Part three
The ship flying to the Colony, a distant planet, has been hit by a big meteorite. Some systems failed and by mistake, one of the passengers wakes up, one hundred years too early.
Central computer of the ship has repaired most of the damage but still there are some errors causing problems on the ship. One day, Jim is caught in the lift. He can’t open the door. Next day the lights go off and the ship is dark for a moment. Jim tries to find the problem but he can’t.
Aurora and Jim – the only not hibernated people are angry at each other. Aurora thinks that Jim harmed her by waking her up too early. Jim feels guilty but now he can’t do anything about it. But after some time both of them feel really lonely. They decide to talk again.
They understand their situation but still, they try to find pleasures of life again. Instead of living separately, they talk more, they play together and actually they are happy again. Playing basketball or watching films is nicer if you can do it with another person.
But soon their happiness ends. They find the problem: the main nuclear reactor has been damaged. There is a hole in the wall of the ship. Through that hole, a stone hit the reactor and part of it doesn’t work well. This component has to be replaced with a new one.
But to do it, Jim has to leave the ship and repair it from the outside. It is a very dangerous mission. He has to get very close to the reactor. It is not safe because of the heat and radiation.
Aurora is afraid but she waits inside, ready to help. And indeed, the help is needed, because Jim has serious problems. The line connecting him to the ship gets broken and Jim floats away from the ship. Luckily, Aurora finds another space suit, leaves the ship and catches Jim.
She takes him back to the ship, but Jim is unconscious. She takes him to a special capsule, switches on the healing computer and saves Jim.
Years later, the ship reaches the Colony. The crew and the passengers wake up from their long sleep. But what they see in the middle of the ship is a great surprise: the place doesn’t look like a modern space ship but like farm on Earth. There are plants growing in the main hall, there are tools used for working in the field and other things designed by … Aurora and Jim.
Eighty years before, they decided to listen to the bartender – to make the most of their lives. They spent their time well, even though they had to change their plans and accept the reality – so much different from their plans.
