Read and listen to a story: "Bill and Ben". Two boys go to school. Both would like to be good students. But only one knows how to do it.

Bill and Ben

Two brothers: Bill and Ben are in school now. Both of them want to be good students. Bill would like to learn about plants, minerals and animals. He is interested in Science.
Ben would like to learn English.
At the moment they are at home. Ben is sitting at his desk. He is reading his English book. It is a book for children. Bill, however, is watching TV. He is lying on his bed. He is sleepy. He isn’t learning and he isn’t reading. Bill often plays computer games after school. Ben, on the other hand, doesn’t waste time. He learns a lot. Even the way back back from school is time for learning: while walking, he usually listens to audiobooks in a simplified English. His room is always tidy. He keeps his textbooks and his copybooks on a bookshelf near his desk. He does his homework just after school. He never forgets his homework.
Bill would like to learn science but, as he says, he has no time to do it. He remembers about his lessons and he really wants to do his homework every day, but after playing computer games and watching TV he is always very tired. He believes that the homework can wait. On Fridays he usually tries to learn. But his room is so untidy, that he can’t find anything. He doesn’t know where to find his textbooks, copybooks or even his pencils.
In the morning, Bill gets up late. Then he has to hurry. He never walks to school - he always runs. Sometimes he forgets his lunch or his books.
Ben, on the other hand, gets up early, takes a shower, has his breakfast and then, he goes to school. He enjoys mornings because he loves walking and listening to his audiobooks at the same time. His English is getting better and better every day.
Bill only plans to study Science, but maybe later. Maybe next year.

Ten months later...
It is the end of the school year. Bill and Ben are getting ready for holidays. They are waiting for their certificates. They are also thinking about their work during the last few months.
Now, it is your turn to think about Bill and Ben. Which boy knows more today? Which one is happier? Whose marks are better?
What about you? Do you work like Bill or like Ben?

KAHOOT with our friends in Western Siberia

Our students from class 7c have just made their new friends. On Friday they met students from Nadym, Russia. They are in class 10. Our classes were connected via Skype. We played Kahoot.  The questions were about grammar and general knowledge. After the game the students spoke for a while with each other on Skype.

Such meetings are always educational. We spoke to the students from another country, we learnt that we should speak English really slowly and that during such a meeting, the class has to be very quiet.

LISTEN

On the left, you can see the classroom in Nadym.

On the right, there is our classroom.

You play KAHOOT using your phone or tablet. You read the question from the screen and you choose the correct answer on the phone.

Together with the students in Nadym and with their teacher Miss Julia we decided to continue our meetings. We plan to record video messages, talk on Skype, play KAHOOT and other games.

If they send us some pictures or if  they write a message for us, you will find everything here.

                               ROBIN HOOD

I’m sure you know that character – a funny and cheerful man in green clothes living in the forest with his friends. What else do we know about Robin… he takes money from the rich and gives it to the poor. What about his life in the forest… well, with so many friends it should be fun. But it is not. The Sheriff of Sherwood is his enemy. He wants to catch Robin. But how can he do it? The forest is big and Robin Hood and his friends hide well. But the Sheriff knows that Robin is the best archer in the kingdom. He has to use a trick to catch Robin. He organizes a competition. The participants use bows and arrows and they shoot at the target. The best gets the prize. And who is the best? Robin Hood of course. Who will win the competition? Will the sheriff  catch Robin?

Read the story.

On Friday some of our students watched the spectacle. We came early so we had to wait 30 minutes before getting in.  The actors spoke English only. Was it difficult to understand the actors? In my opinion it wasn’t very easy but remember: we listened and watched the scene the same time – what we could not understand – we saw. The actors were talking, singing, dancing, even fighting on the stage.

Let’s listen to your colleagues. What do they think about the spectacle?

Also they want to say a few words about their own learning English. How do they do it. What do they read, watch, who do they talk to in their free time.

Nepal           is calling

Some of you may remember our communication with Ms. Isabel Armer. Our students interviewed her last year. Ms. Isabel is a teacher from Australia working in Nepal.

This year Ms. Isabel sent us a few pictures together with a short text describing her institition and her work.

Ms. Armer works in Nepal as a volunteer.

This is what she writes to us:

Listen to Ms. Isabel

The original text

Bright Future Community Centre runs homework classes for children whose ages range from 3 to 18 years. Some students attend private schools where English is spoken during most lessons. Those students from  government schools benefit from the extra English teaching at the Centre.  For most of the year these classes are supervised and run by older students.  Volunteers, usually from Australia, run extra classes during the holiday times.  These lessons are creative and aim to give the students an experience beyond the usual rote learning in the classroom.

The links with overseas’ classrooms and innovative teaching really extends their experiences and makes learning memorable and interesting.

The simplified text

Bright Future Community Centre is a place where children can do their homework. Their age is between 13 and 18 years old.

Some of them speak good English because they have additional classes. Other students learn English at the Centre.

Many teachers at the centre are volunteers and older students.

Ms Isabel is a volunteer from Australia. Her lessons are interesting because she offers more than typical classes. (Ms Isabel speaks English all the time. She is a Native Speaker).

She organises contacts for her students. The children in the Bright Future Community Centre can talk with children in other countries. (Perhaps one day they will talk with us). These contacts make learning English more interesting. The students will remember more if they are interested, motivated and thrilled about some projects.

Some of our students met children in Nadym - a town in Siberia, Russia. Last year it was class 5D and this year, class 7C. Students played Kahoot, spoke on Skype and recorded videos.

You can watch them here:

We learnt about school number 3 in Nadym and our partners with interest watched videos showing our school number 2 in Grodzisk.

This year our friends celebrated 4oth anniversary of their school.

Ms Julia Sibulatova kindly sent us a beautiful video showing the celebrations. You can watch it here:

Ms Julia has written a short text about that event

SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY

In November 12th, the administration, the teachers and the students celebrated the 40th anniversary of school â„–3 in Nadym. The event was held in the House of Culture "Prometheus". The mayor of the city, deputies, and the head of the education department, the principles of other schools, graduates, parents and students were invited to celebrate the school anniversary.

At the beginning of the event, a video was presented to the guests with the congratulations of the graduates. Many graduates stayed after graduation in Nadym and occupy leading positions in different organizations. There was a well-known graduate all over Russia; he is an actor Sergey Peregudov, who acted in many films. Nowadays he is actively engaged in the service at the theater of St. Petersburg.

Then comperes started the event. The comperes of the event were also former students of the school. During the event, teachers and school employees were congratulated by graduates, students, parents and colleagues. As one of the alumni confessed singing in front of the teachers was very exciting.

Many warm words were addressed to the jubilees by fellow teachers. The Head of the Education Department expressed her gratitude to the whole staff for their many years of work and contribution to the educational system of Nadym region.

Besides, during the whole evening, unusual congratulations were received from students of the 2nd and 6th grades and their parents, young teachers and friends from Grodzisk! To this event the school staff and students began to prepare in spring.

The anniversary of the school left kind and good impression in the guests’ hearts!

We have already planned to organise more games and communication with students in Nadym.

Those of you who would like to make friends with children from school    nr 3 please contact me.

Certainly we congratulate you on your 40th anniversary and we wish you many wonderful years to come. We wish you  a lot of happiness and success.
Your performance on the stage was remarkable.

A simplified version of

Christmas Carol

by Charles Dickens

Imagine this: It’s two Days before Christmas. It’s cold outside, the streets are covered with snow. Everyone is busy doing their Christmas shopping. Imagine happy people singing Christmas Carols, decorating their Christmas trees, preparing Christmas dishes. Can you imagine that? Of course you can  - it’s easy. We do it every year.

Now, imagine something else: one person Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge is not happy at all. He isn’t doing his shopping, he isn’t decorating his Christmas tree, and he isn’t cooking his Christmas dishes. Actually he is angry. “Christmas! What a waste of time and money. On that day those stupid people do not work and what is more, they spend so much on such unnecessary things.”

Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge owns a bank. He lends money to the poor people and then he gets more money in return. He loves money. He counts his money every day. “Last week Mrs. Stone borrowed 10 pounds. She has to give me 15 ponds next month. I love my work”, he says.

“Sir, but Mrs. Stone is so poor. She has got five children. How can she buy food for them when she pays you 15 pounds?” said Tom Huckley, the clerk working in Mr. Scrooge’s bank.

“It’s not my problem Mr. Huckley. Everyone has to pay their debts. If they can’t, they should be locked in prison!” said Mr. Scrooge.

“Good evening Sir,” said two men at the door. “We are collecting money for the poorest people in the town. Can we get in?. Your partner, Mr. Jacob Marley has  always been very generous.”

Was generous. He is dead. He died seven years ago. But I am not Jacob. I am not going to waste my money. If they there are poor people, let them die. It’s their fault, not mine. Now, good bye gentlemen, please do not come to my office again”.

It’s late now and Mr. Scrooge is locking his money in the safe. “Tomorrow is Christmas”, said Tom. “Can I take a day off?”

“You know what I think about Christmas. It’s a waste of time and money. But OK, you may stay at home tomorrow. But the day after tomorrow you have to come one hour earlier.”

“Oh, thank you Sir. Merry Christmas”, said Tom.

“Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas. Each year they say the same words and each day they are getting one year older, but not richer! Stupid people”.

Mr. Ebenezer closed the office and walked home. On the way he thought about Jacob Marley. “Today is the seventh anniversary of his death. Oh, Jacob, Jacob, you are so lucky. You are in heaven now and I am here, among those fools who do not respect money. If you were here, I could teach you a lot.”

These were his thoughts when he got to his house. Since nobody lived with him, Mr. Scrooge quickly went to bed and fell asleep. In his sleep he had the most unusual dream. And the most meaningful dream, too.

“Wake up Ebenezer. It’s me, Jacob Marley”.

“It can’t be you, Jacob. You are dead”

“But it’s me Ebenezer. I have come to you tonight to warn you. You have become a bad man, Ebenezer. You are selfish and cruel. You do not help people.”

“Why are you torturing me like this, Jacob. We were friends and partners and now you are trying  to scare me. Why me. Why tonight. Why just before Christmas, Jacob”.

Ebenezer, I am still your friend. I have come here because you can still do some good for other people and for yourself. Because once you are dead, it is too late. This is a special night. The night of ghosts. Tonight you will have three visitors. Three ghosts. Listen to them and believe me – they are also your friends, not enemies”.

With these words Jacob Marley disappeared. Ebenezer Scrooge called after him a few times. He had questions, but his old friend was gone. Slowly he fell asleep.

But Jacob Marley was right – soon the first ghost appeared.

It was midnight when he came. The first ghost looked like a small boy. He was short, thin and he wore a cap. “Wake up, dear and come with me” said the ghost. “I will take you for a short trip.”

“Wait, wait why are you opening the window? I am not made of a wind, like you. I cannot fly”, said Ebenezer, but it was too late. They flew out of the window and over the town. “Who are you? Where are you taking me?”, asked Ebenezer while flying just behind the mysterious boy. “I am the Ghost of the Past. I will show you your childhood. Just look”, said the ghost and at once they landed at a big building. “Let’s get inside”, he said to Ebenezer.

“Oh, my… I know! It’s my old school. I remember its smell. It’s the smell of chalk! And who is that boy?” Ebenezer noticed a little boy sitting by the fire with a book. “It’s you, don’t you remember? It’s Christmas but you are not at home”. “Yes, I remember, my father didn’t invite me for Christmas. I was so lonely”. “Yes, you were. Maybe that’s why your heart is so cold now. But it’s time for me. Remember, I was your first guest this night. Wait for the second visitor”. After these words, the little ghost disappeared and Ebenezer woke up, his eyes full of tears.

“It was so sad. Nobody loved me. I was always so lonely”. “Oh, but that is not true”, he heard a voice and he saw another ghost. It was a young woman and she looked very happy and cheerful. “Come with me and I will show you that there are people who love you. Ebenezer, even though you are so unpleasant, they still love you!”

“You must be the second ghost. What are you going to show me? My sad life when I was a boy?”

“Oh, no, I am going to show you something else. It’s not about you. It’s about people who are unhappy because of you!” Suddenly Ebenezer heard voices and he saw people at the table. “Oh, It’s Tom, my clerk with his family. But why are they so sad?”. “It’s because their little boy is dead. You didn’t pay Tom enough and he could not buy the medicines and food for the boy.” “I didn’t know that they were so poor, ghost. If I had only known… “

“Now you know Ebenezer. In a moment you will wake up in your bed. Remember, you are still alive. You can still change things”. After these words the second ghost disappeared and Scrooge woke up.  “I don’t like Christmas and I don’t like wasting my money, but I didn’t know that people suffer because of me. Perhaps I should be more generous. Perhaps a happier clerk will work better. “

No sooner had he fallen asleep than the third ghost appeared. “Each of you make me sad, you ghosts. What are you going to show me? Where will you take me?” said Scrooge. But the ghost did not answer. He was scary. His face was covered with black cloth and he had a burning torch in his hand. With his finger he pointed to the ceiling. Ebenezer flew up to the ghost and looked down. On the bed he saw a dead body covered with a blanket. Suddenly the ghost took him out through the window. In the street people were talking loudly to each other: “That old scrooge is at last dead. His heart was made of stone. Are you going to his funeral?” “Not at all. And I think nobody will go. How could anybody love such a bad person?”

“Ghost, are they talking about me? My name is Scrooge… and I am scrooge, indeed. I have always loved money more than people. Ghost, please, give me a chance. I would like to be a better man. The first ghost said that someone still loves me. Is that true?”

“It’s your nephew - your dead sister’s son. And his family. Scrooge, you are still alive. Remember, if you want to do some good, do it now. When you die, it is too late”.

When Ebenezer woke up it was morning. And it was Christmas. Ebenezer jumped out of bed, got dressed and run out of his house. In the street he shouted to a little boy: “Hey you, come here, don’t be afraid. I am a different man, now. Here, take this golden coin and buy a big turkey for me. And keep the change!”

Then he stopped two men collecting money for charity: “Gentlemen, please, come to my office. I would like to give some money to the poor people in our town. Come today, after all, we have to help the others now rather than later”. “You are right, Sir”, answered one of the men and the other added: “Isn’t it Mr. Scrooge? The man who never gives a penny?”

“Perhaps it is the same man but it is Christmas, isn’t it? It’s a time of miracles!”

That day Ebenezer spent the Christmas Eve with Tom’s family. He bought lots of gifts for everyone, a beautiful Christmas Tree and lots of food and sweets. And the boy with the turkey was also invited.

That was the first time in his life when Ebenezer was really happy, even though he didn’t earn a penny that day.

That was the first day of his new life. He never forgot that helping others is as pleasant as earning money… or even better.

Christmas in Nadym

A few days ago we received a message from our Russian friends. We have  chatted with them on Skype, played Kahoot several times, and exchanged our recordings.

Read  the article written by Ms. Julia Sibulatova and watch  the video.

"Christmas in English" in the school â„–3

On December 15, on the eve of the celebration of the Catholic Christmas, Russian students had a concert "Christmas in English". This event has already become traditional for teachers and students of the school. The event was conducted by teachers of English. The students from the primary and the secondary levels took part in the concert.

Both children and teachers managed to create a real holiday: with English thematic verses and songs, a small theater with Santa Clause. There was a beautiful waltz. The students of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 classes presented their bright performances; and their parents took an active part in the preparation of the event. They helped children with costumes, supported their children in every possible way at rehearsals and during performances.

At the end of the event each class which took an active part in the concert received memorable certificates, signed by Santa Clause. The certificates were for the kindness and good behavior in the academic year.

Did you celebrate Christmas with your classmates and teachers? How did you do it?

The Seventies

Golden or Rusty?

On the 21 st March (the first day of Spring), the ground floor of our school turned into a museum.

Among the artefacts you may find old tools, machines, pieces of furniture, banknotes, telephones, bottles and many other "gadgets" from the past.

Look at them closely, and think what they were used for. Which do you like more: the old or the new?

Camera

To use it you didn't need an SD Card. The pictures were black and white and were printed on paper.

Tape Recorder

It was a big and heavy machine. There was no hard disc but a very long magnetic tape

Record Player

Those vinyl records were very fragile - you could easily scratch them which spoiled the sound.

Phone

Those phones had no address books and they could not send SMS. The only function they had was... placing phone calls.

Iron

The old iron was heavy, hot and it was used for ironing ... just like the modern irons.

Siphon Bottle

In the seventies there were no plastic bottles. Only glass ones. When the siphon bottle was empty you could get it back to the shop and replace it with the full bottle

Vessels

Ration Cards

Banknotes

In the old times, believe it or not,  pots were used for cooking, cups for drinking, plates for eating and knives for cutting... those were the times...

These days we o ften buy too much. When we realise it, it is too late. But in the seventies you needed these cards to buy meat, sugar, sweets, and many other products.

500 zÅ‚oty is a lot of money today. But in the old times it was worth 50 groszy.

Vocabulary:

rusty - zardzewiały

turn into - zamieniać w ...

artefact - obiekt musealny

tool - narzędzie

piece of furniture - mebel

fragile - delikatny, kruchy

scratch - zadrapać

worth - warty
